Joel considers himself a prairie boy, haling from a small French community in Alberta. Like many product designers, his education began with Lego®, which sparked his interest in design and offered him an endless creative outlet. His formal design education came at the University of Alberta, where he graduated with distinction from their Industrial Design program. Designing product largely for the Umbra Bath category, Joel’s style tends towards the masculine, with strong shapes, icons, and bold materials. He loves objects that nest, stack, or are modular in nature, like those Lego® blocks that got him started way back when. His inspiration comes from all over the place, but working a functional category like Bath, he finds that existing problems or annoyances make great starting points. Outside of work Joel loves sailing, namely for its rich history, steeped as it is in distinctive terminology, and products that exist in few other places.

Born in Seoul, Korea, Sung Wook discovered from a young age a desire to construct things and work with his hands. He went on to graduate at the top of the Industrial Design Program at Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) University and win first prize in Driving Design, a Canadian student design competition put on by Umbra and Audi. His passion for creating and building follows him even outside of work, where he loves working with Lego® and other modular building sets. At Umbra, Sung Wook is striving to create unique impressions through his designs; delving into infinite possibilities and redesigning common products, with the goal of helping people find excitement in everyday life.
